2024 Reading Strategy Session 1

Hey,
TLDR: I did not understand why the hammer here is the main idea.

What I understood from the class is that the main idea of a passage is the central point supported by every sentence that follows. In the example we discussed (snapshot attached), we are trying to identify the main idea through the “hammer” technique.

The hammer identified is the third sentence, starting with “Nevertheless…” However, if we look at the last sentence, it says: “critics and proponents alike agree, though, that the rise of social media has profoundly impacted how we communicate and interact.” This sentence only acknowledges that social media has impacted communication and interaction, similar to the first sentence, but does not solely focus on negative impacts.

Why is the last sentence, or even the first sentence, not considered the main idea— that social media has impacted communication and interaction? One might argue that the use of “though” in the last sentence signals a shift, which could make it the hammer as well.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it.

Hi, of course “main idea” is likely to be a little bit subjective.

I would say maybe because a “wide belief” is not really interesting information, or at least its less important/interesting than what “some scholars” think.
