Hi all,
I may be overthinking this, but I feel like the answer to this question is D instead of C which is what it’s marked as in the quiz. C is the answer if n is positive, but if n is negative, isn’t option b greater than option A? Would love other thoughts here.
Quantity A
The number that is 2% less than n
Quantity B
0.98n
Quantity A is greater.
Quantity B is greater.
The two quantities are equal.
The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
Ex. let n = -1
-1 - .02 = -1.02
.98(-1) = -.98
Option B is greater
2\% of -1 is -0.02 so -1 - (-0.02) = -0.98
but it says the number that is 2% less than n. isn’t that -1.02 since that’s less than -1? Your answer is 2% greater than -1
Your first equation is wrong (-1 - .02 = -1.02). It should be -1 - (-.02)= - 0.98
but how is -.98 2% less than n?
I think we may be thinking about this differently but I read the question as we need to reduce the number by 2% of itself. With negative numbers, I believe a reduction moves it closer to the right of the number line.
“b less than a” would mean a - b.
In your case, b = 0.02(-1) and a = -1.
Plugging both in then leads you to: -1 - (-0.02) = -0.98.
