Big book question number 7 text completion

So in this question first blank was not an issue, i understood that it was a support because of the and, For the second blank i took even though as the contrast word and the idea to the left is bad because of the claim disrupting the blood pressure regulation and increasing the hypertension, so the idea on the right is supposed to have a good connotation so if the researchers would find inconclusive results that Support the relationship, it would be a good thing right? because that would mean exposure to noise wont lead to disruption of blood pressure and hypertension. please help me understand my mistake in this

Thanks

How can inconclusive results support the relationship?

So here the relationship is referred as a claim that says sustained noise would lead to disruption in blood pressure etc, so if they obtain inconclusive results that support the above relationship that means the relationship is not 100% accurate which is a good thing right because that would mean sustained noise wont lead on to the issues mentioned above

the idea to the left is bad because of the claim disrupting the blood pressure regulation and increasing the hypertension, so the idea on the right is supposed to have a good connotation

You were right to pick up on the “even though” as signaling a contrast. However, you cannot assume that the contrast to something bad must be good–it can also be unclear or neutral. In this sentence, the results are described as inconclusive. By definition, such results neither support nor refute the relationship. This means we are working with a contrast in clarity, so the correct blank should reinforce this ambiguity.

So what exactly “the relationship” is referred to as

“The relationship” = sustained noise → changes in blood pressure.

The study’s results were inconclusive, meaning:

  • The results did not clearly show the relationship is true
  • The results did not clearly show the relationship is false

Since the results are unclear, the blank must keep that uncertainty in mind and not call the results good or bad—just unclear.

The correct choice for blank 2 is “obscure”: not discovered or known about; uncertain

“Obscure” fits with “inconclusive”, since it supports the idea that the results do not provide a clear answer about the relationship between sustained noise and blood pressure.
