Big Book Test 11 Sec 5 Q 28

I don’t understand why the answer is B. shouldn’t the range be between 9 and 31?

Hint: sketch a diagram.

I did. One side is 12 and the other side is 20. Based on the triangle rules the sum of 2 sides should be greater than the third side therefore side d can be greater than 8 (20-12) or less than 32 (12+20)
I don’t understand how it can be greater than AND equal to 8 or less than AND equal to 32.
If d is 8, then 8 +12 = 20 (third side) not greater than 20?

They’re asking you for a range.

Yes but then why is the sign greater than and equal to and less than or equal to. Wouldn’t that imply that 8 and 32 can be sides?

Well, kind of. 8 and 32 cannot be sides of a triangle, but in this problem you can kind of do that by putting the three points on the same line.
