Big Book Test 3 Section 5 Question 7

I thought the answer to this question was D, but the correct answer is actually A. When I looked up the definition of tout on Google, it says this: attempt to sell (something), typically by pestering people in an aggressive or bold manner; attempt to persuade people of the merits of (someone or something). While I can see how the second definition might work, I think attribute fits better here. In terms of the first blank, I see that “caught in the crossfire” is a common phrase and fits, deliberation doesn’t seem like a bad fit to me either, especially given that it is paired with attribute. Can someone clarify why A is the right choice? Thanks!

There are two sides here and they aren’t deliberating. They’re arguing or against each other. One side believes it’s Braque. The other Picasso. And this idea that Cezanne should get the credit is caught in the middle. Caught in the crossfire means caught in the middle. And tout means to hold someone or something up. Attribute means to assign responsibility or credit for something, which makes sense, however deliberate does not since the two sides aren’t discussing who should get credit. They clearly believe it’s one or the other.

Does that make sense?
