Big Book Test 7 Section 2 Question 3 TC

Q. For centuries animals have been used as ------for people in experiments to assess the effects of therapeutic and other agents that might later be used in humans.

(A) benefactors
(B) companions
(C) examples
(D) precedents
(E) surrogates

I understand why the answer is (E) but did not understand why (D) would not work. I got confused because of might later be used and so chose (D). Is it because precedent describes events and not animals? Thanks in anticipation!

I agree with this, because it describes earlier events and actions

Hmm Iā€™m not sure but precedent and example are synonyms since and surrogate means to give a proxy. So maybe it better fits the sentence

Yeah that answers it as well. I did not know they are synonyms. Thanks a lot! Further goes on to show ETS gives multiple ways to tackle a problem
