Big Book Text Completion (TC) question

This is from the Big Book - Test 3 Section 3 page 122, Q.6
Here the correct answer is E but I marked A due to the following reasons:

  1. Here there is a Support because of the “To…, simply investigate…” but I could not give a + or - connotation to the blanks. I suspected this was a infinite possibility problem and hence looked at the options. Option A was suitable as there is a risk of people being confused between two fields if the terms are the shared. Hence I thought it made sense Semantically.

  2. While using the two pronged approach I eliminated option E as ‘utilized by’ did not make Semantic sense to me.

Could someone guide me as to where I went wrong in the approach?

Thanking you in advance

This is the right thought process. But I believe you missed a key detail and picked option A.

without forcing implies a smooth process, not one prone to confusion.

In essence, option A would make the sentence like this

“To test the risk of the process, investigate the extent to which terms from one field may, without forcing, be confused with the other.”

But if the terms are being confused without forcing, that suggests confusion happens naturally and easily, which contradicts the idea of risk because risk implies potential problems, not inevitable confusion. So, option A breaks down logically.

Do a similar breakdown with Option E, and it will fit perfectly.

“To test the efficacy of the process, investigate the extent to which terms from one field may, without forcing, be utilized by the other.”

The process is efficient because the other field can utilize the terms without forcing.
The process is not efficient because the other field cannot utilize the terms without forcing.

I hope this makes sense.

This does make sense, thanks a ton for clearing the doubt!!

I just had one follow up question, was I right in deducing that this is an infinite possibility question?

Yes, this is an infinite possibility question

Thank you!
