BigBook TC: Test 3, Section 3, Q6

Hi, I have a question regarding the following TC. I watched the video solution by Greg but I stil have a doubt.

To test the------of borrowing from one field of study to enrich another, simply investigate the extent to which terms from one may, without forcing, be----- the other

According to me the above question is a double possibility. I am having a hard time choosing between answer choice A (risk…confused with)
and E (efficacy… utilized by).

Here is how I approached the question, I would greatly appreciate any feedback:

  1. Idea 1 and Idea 2 are supporting each other. The structure words indicating this relationship are “To” test X, …“, simply investigate Y
  2. Idea 1 and 2 have are both neutral and hence we cannot easily infer that blank 1 or blank 2 should both be positive or negative
  3. Hence this leads to a double possibility
  4. My semantic guesses were:
    i) Harm … mistaken for
    ii) efficacy … complemented by
  5. Going to answer choices, I find semantic guess (i) similar enough to Option A (risk…confused with) and semantic guess (ii) similar enough to Option E (efficacy… utilized by).

The only reason I can think of for choosing option E over A is the usage strategy but I’m not sure if that is a strong enough reason. i.e. You cannot force something to be confused with another while you could force something to be utilized.

Please do let me know what I am missing and how to improve. Thank you and appreciate your help!

You’re 100% there. Just focus on the ‘enrich another field’ and ‘without forcing’ clues. Option E) aligns more naturally with that meaning. It really comes down to usage strategy like you suspect, and that’s what makes Option E) the right fit.
