BigBook test 9 - Verbal

Hello,
I have two questions.

  1. If Greg stated that “decrease” would be correct for the first blank, why did he choose the option with “inhibit” for the first blank? How does this option make sense in this context?

  2. Could you clarify the context below? How do the guesses of “surprising” and “redo” originate? Why not option D?

Q1. Always go for the nearest meaning for the best answer. It may not be exactly to your guessed word. Nearest meaning to decrease among the option is inhibit as hinder, obstruct.

Q2. Again try to go for your own words for the best answer. The finding was startling, that means the variations depending upon the weather was to an unimaginable, out of scope or very high type of degree. This unimaginable finding has necessitated a complete “rework, rebuild, redo” . The best option is overhaul. Option D doesn’t work here. Already the variations in Earth rotation depend on the weather to a certain degree. It can be small or big but it depends. Unobservable means that cannot be observed or distinguished which is fundamentally wrong here.

Hi,

Thank you for your explanation. For the first question, should the second blank be “preserve”? In the Gregmat vocabulary, “perpetuate” means to keep going, and I didn’t realize it could also mean “preserve.” Based on the context, should we choose “preserve” for the second blank? Since the semicolon indicates support, and “attaining artistic success” aligns with “nurturing artistic growth,” the second blank should be a word like “preserve,” right?
