Can't understand the main idea!

I’d studied almost 32 groups and saw lecture videos for 3 months and several times. I can’t find myself comfortable with finding support / contrast and the target word or phrase. In fact I don’t understand where to stop and that idea ends and the next idea started. What can I do? Is there any grammatical suggestions? I am reading New York Times for the last 2 months, 1 hours per day. But what’s wrong am I doing?
