The question says, “places 3 into each except 1, then would need to put 2 in the last one”- I interpreted this has say there are 10 eggs and she has 4 baskets, she can distribute the eggs as 3, 3, 2, 2, i.e. 3 each in first two baskets, two in the last one as mentioned in the question, and not=3 in the remaining basket.
Did not understand how we are taking 3x+2=total equation
When she says she places three into each except 2, that 2 is for the last basket. Thus, she puts 3 eggs into x baskets and has 2 left over for the final basket, giving a total of 3x+2 total eggs.
Similarly, she places 5 eggs into each basket except for 2 eggs for the last basket. Thus, she puts 5 eggs into y baskets and has 2 left over for the final basket, giving 5y+2 total eggs.
Except 2 means she has 2 left over for her final basket. 3,3,2,2 does not work because she fills up that 3rd bucket, while you put 2 in there (not full).
