In this question, I wasn’t able to understand the language… when the student discount is applied to B, cannot the price of B be 27% lesser OR greater than price of Phone A
I believe they are missing the word “more” in the last part. An official question will not make that mistake. Sorry for the typo
(1) B = 1.382A (B is more expensive than A by 38.2%)
(2) B(1-k/100) =1.27A (When a discount of k% is applied to B, B costs 27% more than A)
Substitute (1) into (2):
1.382A(1-k/100) = 1.27A
1.382(1-k/100) = 1.27 (we can divide both sides by A since A is nonzero)
1-k/100 = 1.27/1.382
-k/100 = 1.27/1.382 - 1
k/100 = 1 - 1.27/1.382
k = 100 - 127/1.382 = 8.104 < 10
Therefore, B is greater.
Ryan is correct; this has been fixed.
