ETS Hard TC

Hi everyone!

I came across this question and understood that for the first blank, there exists no option that goes with the word “supports” hence why I chose “undermines”. However, for the second blank; I had a really hard time picking one of “diffuse” or “inimical”.

I thought that the word “diffuse” (meaning “spread out”) could be used to tie the two movements together in that they were not closely linked. Also, I wasn’t able to find much evidence as to why “inimical” (which is a very strong word) works. I think I might be expanding the definition of “diffuse” a little too much. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think it’s this. If she worked on both movements it would undermine the assumption that both movements were inimical (hostile) towards each other. What does the explanation from ETS say?

Thanks for you reply Ganesh. The explanation says that “support” doesn’t really have a matching pair and so the answer would be “undermines” and “inimical”. It also says something about the two movements were either similar’ or opposed (nothing about why “diffuse” is wrong though). I however guessed ‘similar’ or ‘different’ (not opposed). The distinction I thought was very subtle but it’s understandable since it is a hard question. What do you think I can do to think more in line with ETS’ reasoning?
