ETS TC I Clarifying logic

Hi! I solved the follwoing correctly, but want to clarify logic, and see if I’m missing how I can most logically arrive at the right answer:

My thought process:

  1. I first identified that this is double possibility: predicting strongly + connected, and weakly + not realyl connected
  2. intimately + inseparable fit my first guess
  3. A, C for blank 1 are both fitting in my negative connotation guess, and they have the same meaning also, and both of them can’t be the right answer, so I did eliminated that
  4. Just to be sure of this elimination, I checked if blank 2 options have anything related to “not really connected”- and the only negative option is “threatened by”, for which I have no evidence

QQs:

  1. Can you please help me validate this train of thought- okay to eliminate 2 similar options?
  2. How “strictly” do you stick to your predicted word vs. ans choice? Here it was still clear, but I have run inot cases where my predicted word does not match with the options at all, and I resort to looking at all the answer choices, and then seeing which one of them has evidence to back it from the sentence- do you reccomend this approach?

Your thought process is solid. This is exactly what I would’ve done, and the fact that you could see both possibilities tells me that you’ve practised your strategies well.

Coming to your questions:

  1. Yes, your train of thought was correct - well done. No, you cannot eliminate 2 similar options if they both fit grammatically and meaning-wise. If so, you may need to select the option that is the more stylistically suitable choice. A not so strong example to demonstrate this: D and E both makes sense grammatically and meaning-wise in blank 2, but D is a clear pick over E because it goes better with the ‘intense’ tone conveyed in the sentence.

  2. Sticking to your predicted word: Guessing the word in the blank can be difficult. This is normal because this skill comes with a lot of practice. While practicing, when you have the luxury of time, you can go ahead and take all the time you need to guess the words in the blanks. Under timed conditions, though, if you find yourself getting stuck on a blank for more than 10-15 seconds and stressing out over not being able to guess the word - MOVE ON!. Your strategy, which is looking at the words and then backing them up with context clues, is exactly what needs to be done if you fail to predict the words.

All of this is my personal opinion, of course. Overall, based on this, I see that your TC skills are really good.

Thank you SO much for this very detailed, prompt response.
Very helpful clarification on the guidance to not eliminate two similar words; and will yes, dedicately practice word guesses.

Also some validation always boosts confiedence, thanks!
