ETS Verbal Question

In the dedicated ETS session 2 tc and se dedicated #2 I did not understand the reasoning for how gregmat got to the answer for question 6/6. See below:

Even after blank against the blank of popular sovereignty were included major figures in the humanistic disciplines remained skeptical about the proposal to extend suffrage to the masses.

I understand the ‘Even after’ is a contrast phrase, but am confused about what comes after the against the phrase. How did they get to the final answer on this question? Is there another way to go about this that is simpler? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kailas

Let’s break down the question

Something was added as a precaution against something problematic related to popular sovereignty.

Despite these additions, scholars were still doubtful about expanding suffrage.

Even after is a contrast. Apply some logic here

1st blank - What would be included to prevent issues with popular sovereignty?
2nd blank -. What problem with popular sovereignty might require safeguards? - Negative

Now when you look at the answer choices, it becomes clear that safeguards and excesses is the right answer.

Safeguards against excesses is a positive idea which is what we are looking for. We don’t get this with any other options.
