Since “urbane” has “sophisticated” and “pedantic” has “intellectual” as synonyms, can I see “urbane” and “pedantic” as synonyms?
I guess this is a stretch but I thought both words had something to do with being smart, and I linked smart with providing a lot of detail (“the copious detail Aubrey provided…”) so I grouped “urbane” and “pedantic.”
Thank you in advance!
*** The right answer is “sincere” and “forthright”
While “urbane” and “pedantic” both may relate to intelligence or knowledge, they convey different aspects. “Urbane” indicates smooth, refined manners, while “pedantic” implies an overemphasis on minor details, often to an annoying degree. In the context of the sentence provided, “urbane” doesn’t inherently connect with providing detail, whereas “pedantic” does but in a way that suggests Aubrey is being overly detailed, not that she isn’t. Thus, they are not direct synonyms in this context.
