Gre Verbal Reasoning Practice book TC Set 2 Q4

According to the solution Quality of sound must be in contrast with performance, but there is , in b/w… Can someone please elaborate why it is a contrast?

Can you type out the whole question?

The setting in which the concert took place (i) ______ : the group’s performance was elegant and polished, but the sound, which seeped across the cold, unresonant high school auditorium, was oddly (ii) _____, given the energy the players seemed to be putting into it.

A Exacting a toll
B encouraged nervousness
C Solved the dilemma

D clangorous
E Tepid
F Inviting

CD is the answer? Oops I totally messed this question up. So for the second blank, let us srike out

because it is secondary information, non-restrictive adjective clause. but indicates contrast, constrast with the last part of the sentence, the engergy… so we can set up a block of 4 here. energy–>warm oddly–>lukewarm=tepid, hence the first blank has negative meaning, C is absolutely wrong, we don’t have evidence for nervouness, so A is the only answer fit here.
Maybe still my explanation sucks lol. If someone has better clarification for this question, I’d appreciate your input.

Answer is A E. I am able to comprehend why first part is A but second blank is off my head… I am not getting why it is a contrast…

Well, in my humble opinion, if you look at the sentence it says this damn sound has some cold elements right? but the last part of the sentence said they put lot of energy into it. So if this is the case, a lot of energy being put into this, then it should be warm. the word oddly creates this contrast.
You can reduce the latter part like this, the sound was oddly(blank), given the energy…

Thanks! Chloe I think I am getting your point… Anyways I initially though that , (last one) is acting as a support but in reality it is getting superseded by oddly, it’s working like Although- analogous term I guess for oddly. Am I right ?

Exactly although yes ! And welcome mate!

Opening this thread again. I was confused between A and B (but chose the latter). “Exacted a toll” means “to cause suffering, loss, or damage” - how is this not super strong for a concert? I didn’t like B, but it was the only option left

I’m not sure if toll implies damage, it means more like “had some drawbacks”.

His intense studying took a toll on his sleep schedule.

For example

Opening this thread again. as “:” shows the support and after “:” the idea is +ve “performance was elegant and polished" so the blank should be +ve then why not C ? as A means “demanding some drawbacks”.

Not really. The “elegant and polished” describes the performance of the students, while the blank is talking about the setting.

The bit that talks about the setting tht you need to support is “cold, unresonant high school auditorium”
