Hi! Did not understand a specific thing in this QQ-

Why are we crossing out the “must be independent” case?

I understand that in cases of indp. events, individual probabilities can be > 1- which is what is happening here, and since we have deduced that in no case can this be mutually exclusive- why can we not say that this must be independent?

Just because something is not mutually exclusive does not imply that it has to be independent.
