Insane Practice Score Drop Off

Hello. I have been studying for the GRE for a while now, and over the last few weeks I have been taking practice tests. I’m not too worried about verbal, so I’ve been focusing basically all my attention on quant. I am aiming for 165+. My scores are:

OG Paper Test 1: 168 quant (only did quant on this one): 4 weeks ago

OG Paper Test 2: 165 Quant (again only quant): 2 weeks ago

PP1: 166 Verbal, 170 Quant: 1 week ago

PP2: 160 Verbal, 161 Quant: yesterday

On PP2 quant, I scored perfect on the first section, but I completely bombed the second section, getting 5 wrong. I think poor time management and silly mistakes were the major contributing factors to my poor performance here. I ran out of time and had to guess on like three questions.

This last practice test result is really concerning, as it’s left me feeling uncertain about what my current ability is. Are these kinds of fluctuations common at all? What is usually the root cause? What would be the best way to address these weaknesses?

At this point my plan is as follows. I want to take the exam in mid-to-late-November. I’ll spend the next week going over all my mistakes, identifying problem areas, and drilling. I’ll then spend the following weeks until exam day working on doing problems under tight timing conditions.

These types of fluctuations can happen if you have trouble with time management and make “silly” mistakes. It could also happen if you have foundational weaknesses.

Complete the following diagnostic quizzes if you want to check your foundations: Quant Foundation Quizzes - GregMat. Particularly, find the 7 forms labeled “Arithmetic”, “Algebra”, “Coordinate Geometry”, … and see how you do on those.

Please review the test you took and assess if you could have gotten those three questions you skipped right with a little more time. Think about if you managed your time efficiently. Did you spend >3 mins on many questions? Check out the video “Time Management for the Shorter GRE” on Week 4 Day 6 of the 1 month plan.

I would first see where your weaknesses are. If you have foundational weaknesses, then I would review some Quant Flashcards under the 1 month plan and do the associated quizzes. If you have time management issues, then try to apply the approach in that video I suggested.

Good luck! I believe in you
