This was an interesting question! I learned a lot from your linked article, however I chose D when I was solving the question.
My deep dive (jk I just googled it) revealed the following:

That equation is not always applicable:
R = 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,9
Mean = 54/10 = 5.4
Median = 5.5
Mode = 9
Mode by the equation = 3(5.5) - 2(5.4) = 16.5 - 10.8 = 5.7
