Need Help GRE Big Book Verbal Question

Capture

Could someone help me with the strategy to use here, I got the answer but couldn’t apply the math strategy here, or any other strategy

I would hone in on the comma and look at the second part. The junior refrains from ______ criticism of the seniors. We hurl criticism at somebody. So now the idea is that he refrains from doing something unpleasant.

Look at the first part, not wishing to appear ______. If I do something to not look bad or look good, would I criticize or not criticize? I wouldn’t.

So, the first idea is positive the second idea is positive. The math checks out. But notice: in order to make the ideas positive, the words must be negative because part 1 has not in it and part 2 has refrain in it.

A, C and D are out.

Inquisitive is not that bad a thing, I’ll go with E.

Sorry if it’s the wrong answer, but I would stick with my logic unless presented with a better one.
