Need help with this question

Hi, I tried to use different strategy and could not get any clue. Also didn’t kinda convince with solution explanation. This question is from official guide

Mechanisms develop whereby every successful species can _______ its innate capacity
for population growth with the constraints that arise through its interactions with the natural
environment.

A. enhance
B replace
C produce
D surpass
E reconcile

bro just use info from passage, species is succesful. k? right? so it means what? they are big population. ok? now what can we say about innate capacity for population growth then? well it must be enormous. since they are so populous. ok? fine? now constraints are put on BIG capacity by interacting with nature. k? what are these constraints going to do? well it does not make sense that they will let them increase beyond BIG capacity. right? so what then? it will either decrease poplation or keep it constant. u see any option for decrease in answers?? no?? ok. then what about constant?? yes u see reconcile so answer is simple. reconcile. real life example is china. so much population. babies everywhere. now what? no more population growht. in this case not natural but enforced by their govt. anyway point stands. ok?? got it? ok bye. gg gl

Mechanisms develop whereby every successful species can _______ its innate capacity or population growth with the constraints that arise through its interactions with the natural environment.

You have two opposite ideas here: growth and constraint. Clearly, they are in conflict. What does a successful species have to do? They can’t surpass or replace the laws of nature, so they have to find a balance between those two opposing forces. The only answer that fits is E.

My strategy:

  1. See “growth” + “constraint”
  2. See “successful”
  3. To be successful, the species must ____ growth + constraint
  4. Blank: balance/manage
  5. Answer: E, Reconcile

@keenabdulbasit — I struggled with this one as well until I looked up the 2nd, more academic definition of “stereotype.” Unfortunately, vernacular English has obscured the alternate meanings of the word. Stereotype is typically used for the widely understood 1st definition: “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.” E.g., jokes that stereotype Asians as good at math. Necessarily, it’s hard to shake this definition, especially when evaluating this question.

However, the 2nd definition of “stereotype” should illuminate why (E) is the correct answer: “something conforming to a fixed or general pattern,” or to use a single word, a “generalization.”

Breaking down the sentence: This is a combination of a Focus Sentence indicated by the em-dash, which elaborates the first part of the sentence, then a Contrast and Similarity Sentence. The contrast is highlighting a caveat regarding what was previously stated about “surviving through learning.” The similarity follows the comma, which signals that “learning as thoroughly ____” should convey a similar idea to what was stated before (“but learning that is ____”).

The first part of the sentence states: “surviving through learning,” and if the contrast caveats that, then what would make a sharp contrast with notions of traditional learning? Dictation. If the clause after the comma should convey a similar idea, then stereotype fits well because it is a synonym for generalization.

tl;dr. A similarity sentence nestled within a contrast nestled within a focus sentence. We see “learning.” Then we see a “but” caveating something about learning. Then we see a comma, which should continue or restate the caveat about learning.
