Nervous Test Taker

Hi all, I will make my 3rd attempt at the GRE in July. I aim to hit at least a 162 (currently I have a 160) in Quant as the grad programs I am applying for have that requirement. I am generally a very nervous test taker; unlike most people, it takes me longer to grasp concepts and implement strategies outside of my comfort zone. I get easily frustrated if I get too many questions wrong during practice which begins to cloud my confidence. Not to make this into a therapy discussion but I would be grateful if anyone can share tips/tricks to stay calm during the test and while practicing.

#1 Prepare Thoroughly:

  • Dedicate sufficient time to study and familiarize yourself with the content and format of the exam.
  • Use reliable study materials, practice tests, and review concepts extensively.
  • As you already given the official exam two times; review your official diagnostic report thoroughly !

#2 Develop Effective Test-Taking Strategies:

  • Learn and implement proven techniques for managing time, such as skimming passages or flagging challenging questions to revisit later.
  • Practice identifying key information, eliminating wrong answer choices, and utilizing educated guesses when necessary.

#3 Build Confidence:

  • Focus on your strengths and previous successes.
  • Remind yourself of your capabilities and preparation.
  • Visualize yourself performing well and achieving your desired score.

I would like to further elaborate on point two:

  • Make sure you’re practicing under time-constraint.
  • Have a plan for each section as well as each question type.
  • Always attempt the questions which you’re stronger in first
  • At-least have 5 mins or more for re-checking all your work per section.
