My Essay—
Innovation especially in technology, has played a crucial role in leading positive societal changes. The prompt argues that there have been no negative affects of the same. However, I mostly disagree with this viewpoint for the following two reasons, though I do concede that innovation in technology has significantly improved the way we have transformed as a society.
First of all, innovation in technological fields doesn’t always lead to positive societal changes because it can manipuate our understanding of reality. For example, it does not play a good role in accurately depicting what’s real and what’s not. Additionally, it has increasingly become a source of misinformation and disinformation. In this age of Artificial Intelligence where a machine can generate anything without any fact checking, it is becoming more and more important to consider multiple sources of information to fact check what is being fed to people online.
Secondly, innovation in technology can lead to negative effects on our society because it can lead to job displacement due to automation and artificial intelligence. For example, advanced robots in factories have already displaced human factory workers because they are more efficient and cost effective. It is important for our youth to adapt to these innovations and make a career in a field where they can flourish and make a living for themselves.
However, I do believe that in certain aspects innovation in technology is good for our society. For example, it has made software engineers working in big tech more efficient and productive. In a recent study, researchers claimed that on an average a software developer can do as much as 30% more work than they used few years ago. Additionally, innovation has led us to discovering more of our history as mankind by introducing various methods like carbon dating and various ground penetration technologies like SAR to unearth mysteries regarding our evolution. As our society evolves with time, we should encourage more innovation in various technological fields to make more positive changes in our society than ever.
In conclusion, we should be aware of negative side of innvoation in technology in certain fields as a society for the two reasons stated above. However I do concede that technology can lead to various positive societal effects due to innovation.
