Can someone explain how the answer to this is E? I’m still confused, even after reviewing the answer key. Isn’t Mark supposed to be the 2nd highest salary and aren’t the new employees supposed to have lower salaries than him?
If you divide 80 numbers into 4 quartiles you will get:
[1, 20) = [L, Q1) 20th salary is less than Q1
(21, 40) = (Q1, M/Q2) 21st salary is greater than Q1 and 40th salary is less than M
Now, it is given in the question that Mark’s salary is 2nd highest in the 1st quartile.
Therefore there are 18 people with a salary less than him.
The addition of 8 new people will put 26 people with a salary less than him and repeating the same process as earlier.
(23, 44) = (Q1, M/Q2)
Mark will be at the 27th position salarywise and placed in the 2nd quartile at the 5th lowest position.
I’m not sure what you missed, you do understand that Mark’s salary is 2nd highest in the 1st Quartile right ? Not 2nd highest overall.
