Using math strategy, I understood that the 1st idea is positive and belies is negative therefore the 2nd idea will be negative. I eliminated influential, elitist, transitory and was stuck between controversial and inimical. I chose controversial but the official answer is inimical. Can you please help me understand it?
The first idea is indeed positive, but the second idea need not be negative. Belies means fail to fulfill or justify, so yes, that is negative. The first idea seems to imply that “the nineteenth century activists were doing a good thing by protesting for woman suffrage and temperance”, furthermore in the second idea it says that “this fails to assert that the two movements were blank”, and the blank suggests that it is a bad thing so two negatives mean its a positive idea according to the math strategy therefore inimical is correct as it means to obstruct or hinder. Kind of like Enjoying chocolate mint flavored ice cream is an acquired taste, although not many people like it, it does not mean it’s bad. So two negatives means a positive idea
Hope it helps!
