how does greg know that a square = c and , b square= d, and ab=e?? that info isnt even given anywhere in the question- how did he deduce that?
That’s how you read a multiplication table.
You multiply the row header by the column header of the corresponding elements (c,e, or d)
So like. a \cdot a = c, a \cdot b = e, b \cdot a = e, and b \cdot b = d
