Query about question "Earthquakes" [13054]

https://toefl.gregmat.com/practice?problem=earthquakes

I think for 6th word starting with ‘w’, things are a bit ambiguous as correct possibilities are more than one.
e.g. ‘waves’ or ‘which’, context for waves is much more evident and which seems very general word to predict with just one starting letter.

Any better explanations, where am I wrong?

@OscarT

user14555, “waves” is not a correct possibility here; it creates a comma splice by joining two complete sentences with only a comma. Only “which” can work.

@user14555 please let me know if you have any more questions

Thanks for asking but I thought of it as follows: That particular sentence was single and ‘,’ was acting as glue to join different info(s) and writing ‘waves’ twice in a sentence might not be a standard writing practice.
