In this question:
A student received the following scores on five quizzes (each out of 20): 10.2, 14.2, 19.8, 18.6, and 15.6.
The student has one more quiz to take (also out of 20) and wants to either have an overall mean of 16.5 or higher or a mean greater than 16 combined with a median of 16.5 or higher.
What is the approximate minimum grade the student needs on the final quiz to achieve either aim?
A. 15.6
B. 16.6
C. 17.6
D. 20
E. Neither aim can be achieved
Greg says that the answer is C (ans: 17.6) because it satisfies at least one of the conditions (here it satisfies the second condition, i.e, “a mean greater than 16 combined with a median of 16.5 or higher”). But if the minimum value is 17.6, the mean equals 16 but is not greater than 16. What am I missing here? Thanks!
