Recognizing which subject the highlighted verb is directing!

Question - The highlighted verb “are”(part of speech ) in the image attached refers to which object documents/printer?

Neither, “are” is a verb - that tells you what the subject is doing / what is about.
The opening sentence is making it very clear the “Researchers are” doing something.
The extra clause (i don’t know what you call it technically) about printers/stuff is just extra info about the researchers.
