#Remainders and Negative

Why does -1 divided by 3 have remainder 2?

I have understood when -30/7 has remainder of 5. But with -1 divided by 3, I am having difficulty. Should the remainder be 4, because the distance between =1 and 3 on number is 4.
And also, what happends when 11/ is divided -4 and 4 is divided by -11. I have alternated the pattern to create propoer and improper fraction

3(-1) + 2 = -1 → Remainder of 2

7(-5) + 5 = -30 → Remainder of 5

What do you mean

Thanks for the explanation. So what happens when the divisor is negative? That is what I meant by 11/ (-4) and 4/ -11

It’s the same idea.

11 = -4(-2) + 3 → Remainder is 3

4 = -11(0) + 4 → Remainder is 4

Will the quotient here be negative 1 (-1)?
You have been a huge help; thanks for all your responses.

The quotient is the “thing” enclosed with the parenthesis
