[Spoiler ETS Paper Based 1] RC Passage

Hi all,

I had some trouble in this passage mainly with questions 11 and 14.

In question 11, I knew the author wasn’t suggesting or analyzing anything, ruling out B and C. With D I thought that the passage was somewhat rebutting the contradictory elements that other critics had taken issue with making the choice go against the text. For some reason I thought E was too strong because I remember reading in the “comprehensive verb” list on the website “prove” = “affirm” and “prove” is too strong and so I picked A. But upon checking the meaning of “affirm” later it just showed “confirm” or “validate” which is definitely not as strong as “prove”. Moreover, A is wrong because there is no explanation offered as to why the critics are refusing to consider A Raisin in the Sun deliberately ironic or contradictory.

For question 14 option A, I saw line 5 and thought “incomplete realization” = “extent to which the American Dream has been realized” (option A). I wasn’t sure though whether “looking realistically” (line 5) = “reflects Hansberry’s reservations” (option A). Further, I also was not sure whether the “use of irony” from question stem 14 was related to these “reservations” (option A). I looked at lines 5 - 9 and then thought that this “dual vision” was the probably the connecting piece in between “ironies” and the “reservations” and hence picked A.

For option B, I thought “favorable depiction of American life” = “economic and moral promise of the American dream”, and was really struggling with the use of the word “justified” in this context. Since everything else was lining up with the passage I did end up picking it but was not feeling good about it.

Option C, clearly is just outright mentioned in lines 12-13 so ended up picking it.

My questions are: (1) Do I have question 11 analyzed right? (2) Is my analysis of options A and C correct for question 14 and (3) Is the “justified by” what is making option B wrong?

good work overall with #11!

14 you did well here. With choice A, remember, ETS will word things quite differently from the passage and we’ll all sometimes be a bit unsure if the choice reflects the passage. But there is nothing in A that we can say is wrong - it doesn’t miss the point, it doesn’t contradict the text, and there is nothing in A that isn’t mentioned in the text.

And yep - B is wrong because of “justified”.
