I understand why the answer choices chosen are correct according to the contrast set up by the word “Ironically” - but how does the first sentence support the idea of the second one? if the efforts were desultory/ token, how can the second sentence say the hard work wasn’t for nothing?
Kirk has discovered that the more unserious his efforts, the more favourable the results. Perhaps his previous diligence was unnecessary.
