In this question i used maths strategy where first focused on “and” (2nd line) so first blank should have same idea as “refusing to confess” so i used word as not wrong.
then i focused on “various mechanism of self-correction” so to fill blank 3, process is referred to mechanism so i used self-correction.
but i wasn’t able to find clue for blank 2.
please review my process and help me to find blank 2.

They just want you to re-phrase this idea :various mechanisms of self-correction on the premise that even the wisest mean are sometimes wrong…
Thus , the blanks becomes:
when they find it most __(difficult)____, the benefit of _(self-correction)___process .

Please check my steps.
In the first sentence “poorly disguised excuses” which suggest that the person is dishonest in his work and is not able to give good excuses. so blank 1 is somewhat related to it.
for second blank we have contrast with “poorly disguised excuses” so blank 2 idea will be not dishonest but due to improbably it becomes related to dishonest. imposing means nervousness so i guessed dishonest person can be nervous.
for blank 3 “sign of great foresight” which mean person is smart because he can estimate future. so blank 3 is related to smart person.
