In the first picture, I don’t know why just by looking at ‘not wishing’ the first blank has to be negative . I mean can’t it be something like Not wishing to be a good (+ ) person, he turned out to be a devil.
In the second picture, I am unable to choose between insightful and thorough. I don’t know why but I am inferring critical judgement as someone is doing it thoroughly. Please help me with how the correct choice is insightful.
I’m not sure what the question is for the first one
For the second one Sure!
You’re likely thinking that being thorough can help with critical judgment, but thorough on it’s own does not represent what the sentence tells us
If you look closely at the sentence —
“Poe’s reviews of contemporary fiction, which often find great merit in otherwise overlooked works, must make us respect his critical judgment” —
it’s really pointing to something deeper.
Being thorough just means covering every detail carefully.
Being insightful means having or showing an accurate and deep understanding of something
Here, Poe is finding value in works that others might not recognize as special. That’s not about checking every little detail; it’s about having the ability to see hidden quality.
That’s why it points to insight, not just thoroughness.
Bottom line:
Critical judgment + finding great merit works others dont; that’s being insightful, not thorough.
In addition, we don’t have any specific information in the sentence that would directly represent thoroughness as a characteristic
In the options for the otherwise ‘…’ part, we chose unappreciated. Does the sentence here mean that his review works find great merit in overlooked/unappreciated works?
If that is so, does this mean he has some hidden quality to find out something good out of something? That is why it is insightful, is it so?
Yes, exactly. Poe’s reviews show he could spot the value in works that most people overlooked. That ability to see what others miss/fail to appreciate is what makes him insightful.
As he is demonstrating an understanding of the literary works to an extent beyond what others had.
Definition of insightful - having or showing an accurate and deep understanding
For the first picture, what i meant to ask is that, during the class just by looking at not wishing we gave it as (-) and to (+) making the blank (-). I am not sure how by just looking at not wishing we can put (-) to this idea. Could you shed light on it please? OR, could you tell me how to approach the first picture problem please?
Sometimes phrases and certain words just paint a negative image.
A good example is the word “charge.” You can’t really “charge” someone with a good thing, so anytime you see that word, you can be pretty confident that it’s negative.
The same with the phrase “Not wishing…” 99% of the time a negative idea is going to follow that.
Not wishing to be a good (+ ) person, he turned out to be a devil.
However, this type of example is confusing me. OR, as Greg said in the video, Do you mean if it’s just not wishing means you wouldn’t wish something bad that’s why give it (+).
But please clarify it with the example i have come up with, above.
