If some bad shit’s about to go down, it’s more likely we’re gonna do something than evaluate our options.
Even better: “Ensue” makes the situation nontrivial. If we were just going to evaluate our options, it wouldn’t necessarily be a big deal. But since those options are “expensive, laborious” etc. if they “ensue” it IS a big deal.
