Test your GRE quant concepts - May 31, 2021

For this question, my approach for identifying whether this is even or odd was different. I just found that since there is one odd power i.e. 3 and one even power i.e. 0 it is neither but in the solution video Greg did it using f(-x) = f(x) rule which again will give the same answer so I wanted to ask between two of them is one approach superior than the other?

Hey @Archi ,
I think both this methods are very similar.
Your method tries to find the powers and then conclude on the type of function
while Greg’s method substitutes all variable with a negative sign and checks if the results is same but with a sign difference. You will get the same answer using both methods. In simpler problems like this I find Greg’s method easier but if a problem has more exponents then I will be inclined towards your method.

Hope this helps!
