in my opinion, If the volcano has been more active, then its not masking its violent nature. The word inactive or sleepy correctly fits in the first blank and goes along with the contrast word although. but thats not the case here. any insights?
I see what you’re saying, but think of it this way: The volcano has been the most active over 4500 years, meaning it’s erupted more than others. But that’s a long time, if it was dormant for the past century or so (before the recent eruption), that could make it seem less dangerous than it really is. That’s why “explosive…belied” fits. The recent dormancy hid its true, violent nature.
