I’m confused because I understand that the graph of n is even because of the y-axis symmetry. However, I think the equation of that graph would be y = - |x| - 1 since the graph opens downward. Is the equation I have written for this graph wrong? Because if it is correct, y = - |-2| -1 = -3. Meaning that a negative input would produce a negative output, which is characteristic of odd functions.
Hey, it seems to me that the equation for the graph you have written is correct.
My understanding is, that an even function can also have a negative output as long as it is the same output if you plugin a positive/negative domain. In short, x= -2 and/or +2 will both give the same solution result if the function is even. ( Even functions are when f(-x) = f(x) is satisfied )
In this case x= -2 results in -3 as you correctly mentioned but so does x= +2. Hence the function is even. Hope this explains. Feel free to let me know if I am going wrong somewhere.
