Timed Quant Practice - First Medium Section #1

Hi,

I’m having trouble understanding why the answer to the problem is 19/48. When I solved it, I arrived at 19/24, just like in the explanation. However, I don’t understand why we need to divide by 2 when considering “both” cakes. Isn’t 5/12 + 3/8 already accounting for both cakes? I thought 19/24 represented the total amount eaten from both cakes, so why do we need to divide by 2?
I hope this clarifies what I’m trying to say. Even GPT isn’t explaining why the correct answer is 19/48 or how to properly arrive at it.

Thanks!

Can you eat 3/2 of both cakes?

I don’t think I am still able to understand.

We’ve updated the question slightly - try again now?

I think I do now. Just needed to think of this question by breaking it down with an example.
