To a draw meaning

In the GRE practice test 1 verbal section 3 number 6, the answer is invention because the first part of the sentence has to be synonymous with the second part of the sentence. However, the phrase that when ________ fights orthodoxy to a draw, should mean that the blank should be equal to orthodox because it fights orthodoxy to a draw right? So what does to a draw means here?
