Trying to understand the translation of the following problem from the 5lb book

I understand how the Algebra works from the correct formulas, but can someone help me understand why the two equations I can derive from the text are:

M = 2V and (M - 8) = 3(V-8) - 6

rather than:

M = 2V and M - 8 = (3V-8) - 6

This is current age.

Now for Eight years ago (subtract 8 from both people age)
so , vikram becomes (v-8) and Marisol becomes M-8
Now, their relationship is
M-8 = 3(v-8)-6

3 will evenly distributed inside (v-8) and not just 3v-8

hmmmm. Why would I not triple Vikram’s age then subtract 8? when I distribute the 3 to the 8 years is that not really just subtracting 24 years from the age?

Let Vikram age be v —> This is his current age
And because the relationship was give for 8 years back and at that time Vikram was (v-8) years old. → this is Vikram age 8 years ago, thus you’ve to distribute that 3 over (v-8) and not just v.
