Is it a good strategy to memorize vocab based on cultural references or word association rather than their exact definitions?
For example when I see the word “stigmatize” or “marginalize” I think of Hester Prynne’s big red “A” from the novel The Scarlet Letter. For those with significant testing experience, what are your thoughts on pros and cons to this?
While it can be useful to include visual cues to remember the definition of a word, I would make sure that you can state the definition. For example, someone might see “stigmatize” and think of the big red “A”, but then think that “stigmatizing” must be embarrassing because the big red “A” was embarrassing. I would just be careful.
