2024 TC & SE Session 10 sentence doubt

Profligate and reprobate are direct synonyms (checked on google). I had selected i) discretion and ii) tycoon. Not sure why either one of them should be incorrect. Could anyone explain?

Tell us why they should be correct, your support/contrast logic.

discretion means in secret. So not only we don’t have any evidence for that, but it’s also against usage strategy. Does it make sense to say ‘you should use your funds discretely/ in discretionary manner’ - it can be possible only if there is evidence to support that you need to hide your spending.

Alternatively, if you think - the sentence is not about hiding your spending but about being prudent (thinking about the future) with it.

I agree reprobate is a synonym of profligate. But with the current evidence, we want to use the first meaning of profligate - that is - spending extravagantly, and not the second meaning (immoral, lack of principles) which is synonymous with reprobate.

Hi!
As per my understanding of the word, “discretion” means “caution” rather than secret. This also matches with “temperance”. Hence, I’m a little confused here still. I completely agree with your explanation for the 2nd blank though.

Just wondering if the source of this question is official ETS?

No this is GregMat so the logic is not as tight as ETS!

It means like caution to not reveal much. So cautious in terms of secretive, but not in terms of saving money.
