A coin problem from PrepSwift Quiz 15

Hello, I wonder why HT = 1/ 8. Is it formula ? In addition, the question says the coin is biased, how do you know H + T = 1 in this case ? the question tells us the probability of the two flips resulting in a head and a tail is 1 / 4? Is this condition useless ? I’m so confused about this question. Thank you.

Hint: “in either order”

Thanks for your hint. Can you say more ?

What are you looking for (i.e, what’s stopping you now)?

Did you read my post ? I mentioned what I am confused about the math problem.

I gave you the hint, and you said “say more”. The hint should have answered your question, and if it didn’t (which seems to be the case), I’m asking on why the hint didn’t help you so that I can assist further.

Because a coin only has two outcomes: head and tails.

I have thought about the hint. In either way means it could be both heads or tails
but I still cannont figure it out.

I watched the given probability lecture video. I found the method used in the solution is not mentioned before. This is why I have no clue for the solution.

Notice that there are two ways to get a head and a tail: HT and TH (hence two ways). We are told that the probability of getting a head and a tail (in either order) is \frac{1}{4}. This means that

2 HT = \frac{1}{4}
HT = \frac{1}{8}

Thanks for your response. H + T = 1. It doesn’t mean 1\2 + 1\2 because the coin is biased?

Correct.
