A vocab learning technique that I would like to share

Hi.

I used to struggle with GRE vocab badly, but I contrived this technique that helped me grasp the vocab very efficiently. So, through this platform, I would like to share this.

I STUDIED the words instead of memorizing them. There’s a channel on YouTube called ‘iswearenglish’. He is a British old man who not only explains the meaning of the words, but also makes very easy sentences of them in different contexts and talks about their Greek and Latin origins, which would enable you to infer the meanings of related words.

I think this is better than googling or using flashcards because, in them, we usually have a tendency to read cursorily, and we only learn to recognize the word at best. This technique hammers the word deep into your memory.

Also, like Greg, this man has very good teaching skills. He won’t bore you. Here’s the channel link

I used to note down the meanings told in these videos in the form of comments in Greg’s vocab Excel sheet. And, since the comments in Excel are invisible unless you hover your cursor over them, they can become your very own Flashcards.

Another thing. Do reinforce this technique with repeated exposure as Greg says – through reading some non-fiction authors like Carl Sagan, Harari etc. And don’t forget to take Greg’s vocab quizzes to test what you have learned.

One downside, however, is that this technique is incredibly slow, and you have to be patient. It took me about 6 months to learn all the words in Greg’s Excel Sheet using this technique.

Cheers.

If you’ve a long prep period then reading from external sources always help. But if you’re on the run let say 1 or 2 months than just rote-memorizing stuff by seeing word-list each day is still the way to go.

yes. of course. I agree.
In fact, it took me about 6 months, while also working on my other skills, to complete all 30 groups using this strategy.
