Algebra Column 1 - PrepSwift Quant Tickbox Quiz #4, Question #15

Why isn’t 1 a correct option to choose from here?

Is it because when we choose numbers, if x=-3 then we would get [Square root of (x^2)]=3 which is not equal to 1. Thus 1 is not equivalent?

You can imagine graphing both the functions; it should be obvious that they won’t match everywhere.

Sure

I’m not sure if I have understood the graphing bit. All the quant I have done is upto module 4 of the Prepswift overwhelmed plan. Am I supposed to understand the graping part right now?

Yeah, I think just heuristically understanding it is fine.

As you can see, the graphs of \sqrt{x^2} and 1 don’t coincide everywhere, so they can’t possibly be equivalent.

Whereas, if you look at this example, you can see that the graph of |x| overlaps with \sqrt{x^2} everywhere, so they are equivalent.

Yeah this makes sense. Thanks!
