Analysis of Long Passage

I tried to summarize the passage as per the following. Can any expert give me a feedback?

  1. A hypothesis→ present ideas of leisure does not match with the past
  2. Elaboration of the hypothesis → in mid ages people did activities which were not considered as leisure by them & vice verse
  3. There are problems in assuming that leisure is continuous from middle age to modern age
  4. Also, there are problems in discontinuity hypothesis as well
  5. A clear division between pre industrial & post industrial era is useful to notice social and cultural elements
  6. But the generalisation "festival culture " does not give a clear picture

Main Idea: The discontinuity hypothesis had its limitations

Hello, sorry for the late response.

Good

Yep. You should also mention the idea of studying history before IR as an anachronism.

Correct.

Yes, the passage is saying that it’s not perfect.

Yeah, the discontinuity hypothesis in this case.

Yep.

Perhaps, this one seems quite informational. Can you try and maybe find the main idea of each passage as a bonus?

Main Idea P1- there is a difference in the concept of leisure between pre and post industrialisation; leisure in pre industrial era is anachronism

Main Idea P2- pre industrial people did had leisure activities but in different form and vice versa

Main idea P3- there are problems in both discontinuity and continuity hypotheses

Hi @ganesh

I tried to simplify another passage from your feedback. Can you please check?

P1-

  1. Simplification: Animal signals like bird songs are costly in terms if time and vulnerability to predators but most discussed is the energy cost. The evidence gives rise to various interpretations

  2. Main Idea: There is discussion on the Energy cost of birdsong

P2-

  1. Simplification: Thomas’s experiment suggests a relationship between song rate and body reserves of male nightingales; when song rate is high they lose more mass overnight

  2. Main Idea: Evidence suggests energy cost of singing in Male Nightingales

P3(I found it difficult)-

  1. Simplification: There are other associated costs like metabolic cost, regulation cost which arise from building additional body reserves, activities in different surroundings. The metabolic cost may or may not be important but there is significant energy cost specially with birds like nightingales

  2. Main Idea: There may be other costs but Energy cost is important

Maybe for this, something like - “We’re not sure if signing causes energy loss in birds”

Looks good.

I think this one is more saying something like:

“There definitely seems to be more energy loss on the nights when nightingales sing, but we’re not sure if this is caused by the singing itself”.

Rest of it looks good, and well done for doing deliberate practice on this skill!

Thanks @ganesh
