I got distance of xy as 2 then mid point will be 2/2 = 1 right?
It would be 1 from X and Y indeed. But that point is not 1 on the number line.

as @Leaderboard suggests, let’s do a simple test. Let’s assume that x is 10 and y is 12. What is the midpoint? Do the same math you did for the problem. You can see that the distance between the points is 2, so the midpoint would be 1 unit away from both 10 and 12. But is the point 1 itself? How can you find the midpoint in this case? The way you come to the answer mathematically (not intuitively) in this 10 to 12 example, apply the same for the given problem.
