Can method 2 be used for problem 1 as long as the probabilities are applied to their respective arrangements?
That seems to be the difference. I’m guessing that:
- because problem 1 involves equiprobable outcomes, problem 1 can be solved without applying probabilities using method 1. But the tradeoff is that the total number of possible outcomes needs to be calculated.
- both problem 1 and 2 can be solved using method 2
